Second Saturday Summer Social (No. 1: May 2023)
This event took place in May 2023. Watch the Recap Video on SPA's Instagram!
The Second Saturday Summer Social is a recurring, community event that promotes connection and creativity in the Fraser Valley. Each month (on the second Saturday) between May and July 2023, we invite lifelong learners to gather over tea and confections while forging connections and partaking in passive activities. Learners are invited to bring along their favorite pastimes (i.e. puzzle, cards, crochet, etc.) and/or simply enjoy connecting with others through conversation.
The Second Saturday Summer Social takes place in Mt. Lehman (peaceful, rural community near Abbotsford) between 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. each month. During the first hour, there will be a scheduled activity that attendees may partake in if desired. The second hour, we are putting the social in the Second Saturday Summer Social by providing a comfortable atmosphere for learners to engage, communicate, and share with one another.
On the Second Saturday in May (13th), exercise your green thumb with gardening enthusiast Cheryl Sheridan of Mt. Lehman United Church. During the first hour of the event (1pm-2pm), Cheryl will guide learners through planting various herbs, from her personal greenhouse, in a recycled planter. Perfect for window ledges and balconies, the herbs are learners to keep after the event! Cheryl will provide tips for choosing the best herbs and answer herb gardening questions. Learners will plant 3-5 herbs each, depending on the type chosen and the size of the seedlings.
All materials are provided, we recommend learners bring gardening gloves and a notebook/pen to jot down her suggestions, as well as wearing gardening-friendly clothes. If the weather permits, this activity will be offered outside. Please come dressed for the sunshine: equipped with a hat, sunblock, reusable bottle of cold drinking water, and anything else to be inspired and creatively activated.

About the Program Leader:
Cheryl Sheridan: “I am a retired nurse of 40 years, much of it at the old MSA Hospital in Abbotsford and then with FHA. I discovered gardening the year I retired and have not looked back. I have taken online courses and read voraciously about whatever it is I want to plant. A lot of trial and error has helped as well. I recently tried my hand at cut flower farming, grew many varieties that provided bouquets to many, especially during the pandemic. This year, I am changing focus to vegetable growing and a weekly market box program with extras going to the food bank. Unfortunately a lot of gardening depends on weather and we have been challenged these past few years with temperature fluctuations from endless rain to heat domes. Always a challenge….it is my passion. I have many different gardens on my 5 acre property in beautiful Mt. Lehman.”
